They Propably Don't Know How Talented I Am - Nigerian Singer 'Bella Alubo' on Artist Xtra

Naijastarz Artist Xtra is a platform designed for talented artists pushing the African music culture in the rightful way.

A platform where you get to know more about your favorite celebrities, what inspires and influences their sound and what it means to them.

On our first episode of Artist Xtra, we had a chat with Nigerian singer Bella Alubo about her latest project ‘Summer’s Over‘, Her music influences growing up and other things you need to know..

WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU RECORDED A SONG?

The first time I recorded a full song was like 8 years ago, But before then I had been to a studio with my friends who were rappers, producers and at that time I’ll just hang around the studio and record myself saying something silly but not a song, The first song I did was a cover, But the first real song I did was about 7 years ago I guess, not too sure (laughs)

GROWING UP, WHAT WERE YOUR MUSIC INFLUENCES

Westlyfe, The Eagles, Spice girls, Plantainshun Boyz, Several random songs from different people who within dive into their whole discography, But I was very big on Brenda Fassie, i had her video clips and her music videos where there were naked women dancing and her birthday song, And a little big on Michael Jackson, Enya, those are basically my musical influences.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND

My sound is borne out of influences from different genres such as Afrobeats, R&B, Reggae, POP, JAZZ, Alternative Music and the likes.
The reflections of my life, my mindset and the things around me play a part too.

PREPARING YOUR PROJECT ‘SUMMER’S OVER’ WHICH SONG GIVES YOU MORE CHALLENGE TO CREATE

The most challenging song was all the ones with features, You know waiting for people to send their verses back, I recorded some with featured artists like with Ezi, we were at the studio together, the one with dice ailes we recorded at his house, but later I recorded part of mine in my house, the other ones I had to wait for the people to record and send back to me so those ones were a bit challenging because everybody is busy you know, so yeah.

WITH THE PANDEMIC GOING ON, WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM YOU THIS YEAR

To be honest I don’t really mess with pressure or expectations like I’m just focusing on what I expect of myself and what I’m willing to do, like whatever stage I’m at is the stage I’m at and people should watch out for whatever I do

THREE THINGS YOUR FANS DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU
  •  I just finished my Masters in international management and business development I’m still waiting for my certificate and my result actually, I just submitted my project, the Topic was exploring online music streaming as a revenue source for independent musicians in Nigeria, yeah I interviewed several people in the industry like Top Managers, Top Entertainment Lawyers, Musicians, it was fun to be honest cause I learned a lot and i feel like the knowledge i wrote about could be helpful to indie musicians but I don’t know how to get it across to people, if I’ll need to publish an article or write books or I should just keep the knowledge to myself and share with people if I talk to them or maybe this is just my own learning process, so yeah that was one long thing about me
  •  I was learning the keyboard when I was little and then my lesson teacher moved back to Ghana, and I just didn’t go back to it, I feel like if I had any direct relationship with music were there was a point that I met music that would propably be the point just like playing with the keys and miming like “Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do” you know just like melody
  •  They probably don’t know exactly how talented I am, like I’m very talented and it keeps revealing itself more with time and yeah that’s it
