Naijastarz Artiste Of The Month – Burna Boy
Nigerian music superstar Damini Ogulu known by his stage name Burna Boy is our NAIJASTARZ ARTISTE OF THE MONTH for the month of August.
The Afro-fusion singer and songwriter came to the fore of the Nigerian music entertainment in 2012 after he released his breakthrough single ‘Like To Party‘. Shortly after his national fame on the heels of ‘Like To Party’ the singer who hails from Ahoada in Rivers State was on a trajectory to even more success in the music industry.
The former Aristokrat Records artiste went on to drop his debut album ‘L.I.F.E‘ in 2013 with other hit records like ‘Tonight‘, ‘Run My Race‘, ‘Yawa‘ further establishing the fact that he is here to stay for a long time.
In spite of the undeniable fact that Burna Boy is undoubtedly very talented, he was still two or three rungs lower than the likes of Wizkid and Davido at the time. This was largely due to what people call his ‘self-destructive’ tendencies. Often times, the ‘Pree Me‘ singer was always leaping from one controversy to another during the earlier stages of his career.
The year 2015 was supposedly a vital year for Burna Boy, he had parted ways with Aristokrat Records and move unto Spaceship Entertainment where he dished out an album ‘On A Spaceship‘. The most defining element of that period in his music career was his Fela-esque hit record ‘Soke‘, the idea of getting closer to Afrobeat was going to set up the dreadlocks sporting musician for greatness in the nearest future.
Fast-forward to late 2017 and early 2018 it became obvious that Burna has transitioned from making dancehall and ragga music to a mild form of Afrobeat closely reminiscent to Fela. In the same year, he dropped his most appealing body of work the ‘Outside‘ album. The album housed hit records like ‘Ye‘, ‘Rock Your Body‘, ‘Giddem‘, ‘Ph City Vibration‘ etc. Finally, someone was getting all the attention and he deserved and he ramped up on the wave with even bigger tunes like ‘Gbona‘, ‘On The Low‘ and ‘Killin Dem‘.
The wave Burna Boy stirred up in 2018 wasn’t only a national or continental wave, it was international fam! The singer gained rapid serious international traction, he was YouTube Artist On The Rise for last October. His music made it to Times Square billboards in New York, United States. He also bagged a deal with Universal Music Publishing Group.
Moving up a notch in 2019 the Afro-fusion singer was the biggest winner at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival 2019 charting home three awards
‘Song of the Year‘, ‘Best Male MVP‘, ‘African Artiste of the Year‘. This was only the beginning as the African Giant was shortlisted and subsequently performed at the 2019 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April.
Performing at the Coachella was big for Burna Boy but things got even more exciting when he won the 2019 BET Awards for ‘Best International Act‘.
On the 26th of June the AfricaN Giant releases self titled Album which became the Top Social Media Global Trends within 24hours of its releases, The 19 tracks Album which features Damian Marley, Future, Angelique Kidjo, YG and many more got alot of attentions and became the topic that took over the discussion on social media.
For Burna Boy becoming the African Giant at the moment was always a dream that was always going to become a reality. He only had to stick to his guns, reinvent his music and keep up the hard work.
Obviously, there’s no doubt Burna Boy is the real African Giant
